Much like Qohor and Lorath, modern Norvos was founded due to the fact that Valyrian Freehold was extremely intolerable to different religions. The Rhoynar did not remain in this location as they preferred the warmer climate of Rhoyne. It is said that “hairy men” from the east drove the original villagers from these places and met their demise at the hand of Prince Garris of Ny Sar. Some think that it may have been maze makers or Ibbenese, however, it is more widely accepted that the people that gave this place life are Andals. From what the fans of the series were able to gather is that it was not Rhoynar.
HistoryĪs much as we know about Norvos, the original settlers are shrouded in mysteries. The climate seems to be quite harsh with hot summers and painful winters with fast and harsh cold winds as well as pale sun. Although the city claims the rule over Axe upon the Shivering Sea the territory is disputed, often with blood, by the Ibbenese. Noyne is ruled by the Norvoshi river galleys that reach as far south as Ny Sar’s ruins where it joins Rhoyne. The Norvos territory sits all across the western bank of Darkwash up until the Upper Rhoyne to the west.
Norvos is surrounded by terraced farms, which sit between small walled villages that are used to support the larger parts of the city. The city serves as a gateway for caravans and travelers who desire to go east-west on the ancient Valyrian roads where the ruins of Ghoyan Drohe are located.
It is sitting among the eastern banks of the river Noyne and has limestone hills, dark forests of oak, beech, and pine around it. Sitting among the Hills of Norvos, Norvos, or as the people call it The Great Norvos, is one of the nine Free Cities located in Essos, between Pentos and Qonor.
